Run

For the first time in over a week I was able to get my 5 mile run in on the elliptical today. Having been sick with a nose and throat issue I was in no shape to be running and breathing hard. I was just trying to breathe without hacking up a lung. Not to mention the fun body aches. I'm not 100% yet but I am feeling better.

I also got word that I passed my class today so just 10 more to go this semester along with a number of tests.  It is going to be busy.

Broke In

I broke in to the truck today. It was great. I searched and found a recommendation for this exact vehicle. I followed what it said and put a couple of wedges in the corners at the top of the door. Then I slid a metal god in and finally managed to get it on the interior door handle. By pulling the handle it is supposed to open the door, that did not work. I tried messing with rolling the window down and managed to get it to go. I successfully broke in to my own vehicle. Sweet!

Pick Up

So I found this 92 Nissan pick up truck for sale today for $300.  The engine ran and idled but it had a loss of power as soon as you tried to drive.  I called Dan and he was in strong support of buying this vehicle and was convinced that we could fix it without much trouble or expense.  So, I bought a pick up truck for a whopping $280 bones.  I started to drive it home and sure enough, it did not maintain enough power to drive.  I came prepared for that and so with the help of Natty's friend, I hooked it up to my car and towed it home.  It is now sitting in the driveway and Dan and I have a little project.  It is actually in really good shape considering the age. I did lock the door and then tried to get back in only to discover the doors don't unlock.  So I am locked out of the new pick up but I will figure that out tomorrow, I hope.  Should be a fun little project and a fun little 4X4 pick up.

Science Fair

I am definitely feeling like garbage right now.  I hope I get past this soon.  It seems to be the flu or something like unto it.  Also looks like Andy may be coming down with it and today Natalie was throwing up though I have not experienced that.  Jack seems perfectly ok for the time being and hopefully will remain so.  I managed to get through my remaining three videos for my intro to pre-clinical class.  Nice to have those done.  I have the final task ready to submit and am just waiting on an originality report to come back.  I am not too concerned about the originality and hope that I captured everything they are looking for in the paper.  I tried to follow the rubric pretty closely and think it should be good to go.  After I wrapped up the videos I changed and walked over to South for the 5th Grade Science Fair.  Andy had his entry.  I thought it looked good and am just grateful that is done.  I think we will still have an ancestor report or something to do and then perhaps something about his historical figure.  It won't hurt my feelings to have my kids graduated from elementary school.  Anyway, Andy did a nice job.  His project was interesting and it involved fire.  It was his own idea as well and that was great.  There were some pretty cool projects there  One kid was charging a cell phone with salt water.  I thought that was pretty neat.  I think Andy had a good time and he got to come home a few minutes early which really was the highlight of the day.  I don't think I would have lasted much longer at the fair. When I got home I had to lay down.  I was out for a bit but had to get up to take care of other parental duties.  I am ready to be out again.

Yep, sick

I don't like being sick and have been quite fortunate this year that when I have felt it coming on I have been able to fend it off. This does not appear to be the case today. After getting kids off to school I went back to bed. Then I was up to visit a property about a steak house. That plus a visit to a friends creamery that is almost ready to open followed by a brick house visit, that kept me out much of the day. There were other errands run as well. When I got home we had a science project to work on and that lead to more hours later as we also had to get it all put together. At the end of the day I feel like trash, my nose is stuffed up, I have a cough coming on, my throat is not happy. We will make it through, hopefully sooner than later.

Coming on

This is not a post about a strange female encounter where a fine lady attempted to seduce me with her beauty and charm. Nor is it a post about how I tried to put the moves on said fine lady. No such encounter has taken place. This post is about how I do not recommend laying sod whilst wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and minimal footwear in the middle of a cold rain. That was not a very smart move on my part yesterday.

Not real sure if I even expressed what I did in yesterday's post. I had fallen asleep shortly after starting and when I woke up around 1:30 in the AM, I found my phone next to me. I turned it on, hit the done and post buttons and officially went to bed. The basics that should have been covered yesterday was that it was a full day with the autism conference, the sod project that was spent working in the cold rain, cleaning the garage, getting dinner for the kids and finally, taking the kids to see Rogue One at the cheap theater in town. By the time I stopped moving I was done.

The coming on portion of this post is simply my reporting that a cold is setting in. My lower back is aching the way it does when I am getting sick and my throat and nose are under a full assault. I am doing my best to combat it but this one is going to be tough to fight. I will do my best and hope for the same. Next time something is coming on I will hope for the fine lady scenario.

Spent

Today was a day. It started early with catering the autism conference and then it never stopped. When I got home from that I set out cleaning up the backyard so I could get that sod down. Managed to get it done with pretty much every piece of sod I had. I am quite happy with how it looks.

Laying Sod

I got a message from Tyler this morning asking if he could borrow my wheelbarrow. I said sure. He was going to be laying sod and needed it to move sod to his backyard. I was working on school stuff but jumped at the chance to take a break from video observations and help lay some sod.  We moved a lot of grass. Once we got it laid there was quite a bit left over, like 30 rolls. I have some sod work to do so I told him I would buy them off of him. So, moved 30 rolls back to the front yard. It was a good workout today. Hope my arms aren't complete mush tomorrow. I was feeling it for sure. It was good fun to be out working in dirt.

More Videos

I am 36 videos into this intro to preclinical class. This is a time consuming class to be sure. I have 4 videos still to go.  I have to finish writing the task and then I can turn this in and be done with this class. I do enjoy the class and the example videos I examine and learn from. Lots of cool stuff out there. Wow, I would write more but I am passing out.  Must rest.

Shorts

This is actually a post about the weather.  I wear shorts often. Most days in fact, regardless of the weather.  Today was no different. I am sitting here typing in my shorts and t-shirt that I have had on all day.  It's comfortable and I like to be comfortable. The weather in Cedar for the last couple of weeks has been absolutely beautiful.  My boys even started wearing shorts which is not something they like to do during the winter months.  Today there was rain in the forecast but when we looked outside this morning it was calm and clear with the sun shining brightly.  There was no changing the shorts for Jack but Andy was in pants but that is probably because his shorts were all dirty.  By the time school let out we had rain falling. It wasn't bad but it was definitely a colder rain.  At about 9:30 tonight we were taking garbage out in preparation for garbage day tomorrow and the rain was coming down heavy and it was way cold. The point is that shorts are never a safe option in Cedar City. You can go from absolutely gorgeous weather to something nasty in no time.  Of course that was the case in most places I have lived.  When a storm come through, it comes, and it doesn't care if you're wearing shorts or not.  For me, I don't care if the storm comes. I'm most likely going to be wearing shorts and I'm going to be comfortable in that storm, or at least I'll be comfortable inside my house during that storm.

My Oh My

I wrapped up my third task today for my intro to preclinical class. Ten more videos and a lot more wiring to do and then I will hopefully be finished with it. There is so much more to do beyond this class. I've gotta keep moving forward. Well, ready to tap out for the evening. Must sleep

Time for Sleep

Didn't have as productive of a day with school as I thought i would.  I got busy with another project and so I didn't make school the priority.  Well, I did get another video obsercation done so I closed strong. I've gotta sleep.

Love

I was just scrolling through my news feed on the facebook and started thinking about family and friends. My heart is somewhat full and as I ponder the feelings I narrow it down to a love I have for my friends and family.  One part of the feed was of the oldest son of some of my friends who got married this weekend. It appeared to be a beautiful ceremony and I feel joy for my friends and for their son and his new bride. Awesome.
Another feed was of from a dear friend announcing the passing of her father after an 11 year battle with Alzheimer's. We lived a few houses away from her dad when things started to get pretty bad. Those were hard days and they have endured them well. This makes me grateful for the plan of salvation and the joys of eternal families.
There were several other stories in my feed but one I truly loved was a picture of mom with Sam and Violet.
Grateful for family and friends that fill our hearts with joy.

Fun Day

Gotta say that today was a pretty fun day. I got up and made peanut butter pie for the ward party.

I then took the boys to the skate park. We had a fine time there though I do have concerns with what I observe there. A lot of bad language today and talk of kids being high. These were kids not much older than Jack. I also get a bit perturbed when I observe these kids making fun of my boys that have only been doing this a handful of times. Jack can be a little goofy at times but he is just out having fun. I'm not sure he even picked up on any of it but it bothered me. Well, it was ok and the boys had a good time. I just get a bit protective.

Had a part come in for the accord. An instrument panel. The speedometer did not work and so I found a used instrument panel. I watched abhow to video and then got it done. On the replacement I found the cruise control didn't function so I ended up pulling it back out. Then I opened up both and swapped out the speedometer/odometer section. When I put the old panel with the new odometer, everything worked. Fantastic!

The ward talent and variety show was tonight. I mc'd it last year and a couple days ago they asked me to do it again.  It went well. I did my hotdog eating thing and pounded it in 7/10ths of a second.  Anyway, it was a great activity. Had a lot of great acts and enjoyed the evening. I had done a few impersonations last year and decided to do one this year. I shaved in a mustache, threw on my afro wig and knocked out a little Nacho Libre. I sang the Encarnacion song. It was a hit.

Had to Work Out

I don't know if it was the dreaded spring forward to save a bit of daylight that has thrown of much of my week or just trying to hammer through my current introduction to preclinical experiences class, whatever it is, this week has been rough on getting in some routine exercising.  This morning I was going to come and get started with my video watching for class and decided I needed to do a little workout instead.  So I ran through some gut busting exercises and then jumped on the elliptical and ran 5 miles.  It was welcome, it was good.  Later this evening I took a little break from the studies and headed out on a bike ride/scooter ride with the boys.  We had a good trip.  At one point I was riding my bike up a steep incline as fast as I could in an effort to beat the boys to the top.  We did it several times and it got the old legs burning.  Fantastic.  I will probably have to do that again. Hill sprints get the heart pumping.  Well, it's not enough just to work out, one has to consider what they eat as well.  I remember when I was having lunch once with President and Sister Sweeney in Florida and Sister Sweeney mentioned that how we eat in our 40's determines how we live in our 50's.  I'm trying to eat right Sister Sweeney.  Tonight I tried a little zucchini wrapped, riced cauliflower & sweet potato, rotisserie chicken, avocado salsa topped dish.  It was actually pretty dang good.  Well, I will do my best to be consistent in working out and in my eating habits.

Philly Fix

My favorite sandwich to make at the shop is the Philly Cheese Steak. Today I had to go in and make some Raspberry Jalapeno jam. While there I had the opportunity to make a few sandwiches. I made a few French Dips and a Pulled Pork and then a Philly came back and they asked if I wanted to make it. I jumped on that. Then another came. Sweet, getting my fix on. Then another order came back with 4 more. That was a great little stint for me. I love getting my Philly fix. I did get to chase them with a thunderbird which is not my favorite sandwich to make but it Isn't my least favorite to make either.

Passing Out

It is just shy of one in the morning.  I am exhausted and keep wanting to fall asleep.  At the same time I am trying to keep myself awake while I press through some of my school work.  I am just beat and so I am not being very successful in my quest. I was pressing forward until just a few minutes ago when the video observation point clocked me out.  I probably should have logged back on but I am just so tired that it wasn't making much sense.  I am going to hit the sack and then hit the books again tomorrow.  Sorry, nothing left in the tank tonight.

Meatloafed

I had come across a recipe for a cheese stuffed meatloaf a while back. It looked good and I wanted to try it. I picked up the needed ingredients and made the loaves of meat on Sunday. It actually turned out pretty well and made for an enjoyable dish. Unfortunately when I cook I sometimes get excited and I used 5 pounds of meat in this rather large recipe. The kids enjoyed the meal on Sunday but we ended up with a lot of leftovers. I don't like to see food go to waste and was happy to eat leftovers but tonight, after three days of meatloaf, I'd had enough. I knew if I didn't toss it I would keep eating it and it is just time to be done. It has been discarded. I am sure it has not done my diet a bit of good. It will likely be some time before I decide to loaf it up again.

The Tank

I am trying to part ways with a certain turtle and two goldfish.  They have out stayed their welcome in my house. We are going on 7 years of having this turtle. Come August I think we hit that mark.  I don't mind having the turtle, I just don't like cleaning the tank and I always get stuck cleaning the tank.  The kids don't really do anything with the turtle or the fish. I'm not too sure they feed them regularly and if they do then that is good and they get to enjoy second breakfasts on occasion when I feed them.  Cleaning the tank is not high on my list of things I enjoy doing and so I ignore it sometimes.  Today I could ignore it no longer. It is clean and clear now and looks quite good, but I still don't wish to have one of my own. There may be an opportunity coming up where I get to release said turtle to the wild, well the back yard pond of some folks.  That is wild enough. The weather needs to warm up a bit before we introduce George to the wild and say farewell to the turtle and his goldfish friends.

Walking

It was a beautiful day today so I mentioned going for a walk when we drove home from church. Jack decided that was a good idea so we went. At dinner tonight I looked at my phone and saw a symbol I had never seen before. I clicked on it and it kindly let me know that I was much more active on the weekend than during the week. It also let me know that I was short of my daily fitness goal of 10,000 steps. I was unawares of this goal and was determined to make my smart phone proud. After dinner I went for another walk. Andy joined for a short stretch and then had to return home to use the bathroom. Jack joined again and rode his scooter as I walked. Truly is was a beautiful evening and the walk was great. In the end I did achieve the fitness goal I didn't know I had and it was glorious. Incidentally, my daily elliptical runs don't count for much on the phone but I can assure you I get in several miles each week on their.

Springing Forward

Here it is again. My least favorite time of year when we move the clocks forward an hour. I am already feeling sleep deprived. Isn't it time we make this go away?  Oh my goodness. I had a buddy post something about sending it packing and some commented on his post making arguments about how it is healthier for people and how we get more sunlight. The sunlight is what the sunlight is. No amount of time tuning is going to change that. Oh well, I am going to have to suffer through the adjustment for a week. I guess I'll be all the healthier for it. At least that's what the experts are saying.

Skate Park

Yesterday Andy had a trip with the scouts to the skate park here in Cedar City. He went and said he had a great time. Jack decided he wanted to go so yesterday evening he and I went over. The boys are using their scooters there. Jack got out and about and started riding the ramps and dropping in and what not. It was his first time there. Well this morning I took both the boys back over to said skate park and they did great. They had to learn how to do certain things but after a bit they both just zipped around. They want to go back tomorrow.

Wild Tale

At dinner tonight Jack told some story about a man that ate a jumbo jet. He was dead serious about this and said he heard about somewhere. I thought that if it was true Google would know all about it. So I googled 'man eats jumbo jet'. Well holy smokes if this story didn't pop up about a dude that ate metal because of some disease. He had eaten 18 bicycles, spokes and all. It was also reported that he had eaten like a Cessna airplane or something similar. It wasn't quite a jumbo jet but it was pretty impressive anyway. How in the world does Jack learn about and remember this stuff? Nothing like light dinner conversations to reveal weird things.

The interweb blew up my plans

I wrapped up my first task for preclinical experiences today and was able to get it submitted. I hope it is sufficient. I then planned to watch a minimum of two videos and possibly three towards my next task. This is where the interweb blew up here in Cedar City and my plans for the day circled the drain. The provider at home was down, and a separate provider for the shop was down as well. That created some challenges with the business but we managed to get other options for credit card processing. Late tonight the interweb came back on. Tomorrow may be a little busier than I thought as I will have some ground to make up.

Sell the Car

Almost a year ago I picked up a little car that I thought would be for Natty to drive.  Well, she never quite got things moving with getting her license and essentially I am paying for insurance on a car that is just sitting in the driveway.  We don't often drive it.  I have a desire to get a truck, something that I can use for doing truck things and that Natalie could eventually drive around in should she get her license.  Anyway, I am trying to sell the car and it isn't going so well.  I've come to the realization that I overpaid for the vehicle last year and there were some key things I should have paid attention to.  Oh well, you live and you learn but that doesn't make it any easier to lose or waste money.

More Observations

I suppose for the next several days I could title my journal entry with some sort of a reference to observations.  That is a major part of my life right now with my current class. It is pretty fun stuff.  I decided to watch an Art class for Kindergartners. I couldn't help but laugh a little bit when I saw these young students.  In the description the teacher talked about herding cats and I think that is a pretty great depiction of what it looked liked in the video for a while.  The other two reviews I completed today were also fine but kindergarten is way busy and the teacher had to really be on her toes.  I am nearly done with the lesson and will be heading to bed as soon as I can.  Well, fun times.

I could say we made some missionary observations tonight as we read through Marien's email for Family Home Evening.  It is fun to read her weekly messages and observe her learning an growth. Grateful for the example she is for each of us.

Pocket Knife

It was fast Sunday today and the Bishops was conducting and therefore opened the testimony portion of the meeting with the sharing of his testimony. In doing so he shared a story about President David O McKay and a pocket knife he was given when he turned 8 and was baptized. This story had to do with losing the knife, not being able to find it, and then remembering being taught to pray. Upon praying, receiving an impression and immediately finding the lost knife.  These stories of faith are awesome.

I too had a pocket knife given to me when I reached the age of 8 and was baptized. My thumbs immediately found their way in front of the blade. That didn't work out very well.  Before long I had multiple cuts on my hands. The knife was taken away for a time. I was then given the opportunity to learn how to handle a knife and eventually earned it back.  What a treasure that was to me as a boy. I wanted to have that knife with me all the time.  I lived in a way where I was found worthy of it and that mattered. This isn't unlike living the gospel and seeking to be worthy of the companionship of the spirit. If we want to feel the influence of the holy ghost in our lives we need to live in a manner that invites his companionship.

Somehow, Someway

Sometimes you stare in the face of a situation that appears to be impossible and wonder if you even have a chance of getting through it. We just press forward with faith and hope. It can be an interesting process to see everything come together. The process isn't always without a little stress and a little worry, maybe it is for some but not me. I do pray for strength to get through it and pray for the Lord to bless us. Somehow, someway, it comes together. I am grateful for these blessings and humbled by them.

Observing

I've gotten my observations under way. I am about 10% done too. I might just get through this class in two weeks. We will see. I've still go 6 hours to go on my first task then have to submit a paper. I am not certain yet what the paper requirements are. Anyhow, nice to be moving through and progressing.

Three Two Seventeen

I am somewhat blown away that we are already in the month of March. Pretty crazy how fast the time goes. There is so much to do over the balance of this year I don't know how one going to do it and remain sane. It will be a busy year for me. I am already feeling tired.

Three One Seventeen

The day, what to say? I was expecting a call that did not happen and that delayed my classes becoming available. Now I am wondering if I might have missed something.  Wonderful. I guess I better double check a few things. Well, what else? I decided that I am going to try and sell a little Honda Accord I bought last year. It is just sitting while Natty is no where near getting her license and I've decided a pick up truck would be much more useful. So I am going to see if I can't change up the vehicle line up. I may have no luck with this idea and might find it better to keep the Honda. Thus far there hasn't been a lot of interest. Anyhow, trying to keep boys caught up on schoolwork and trying to keep Natty going as well. Got to keep pressing forward.
