Ringer!

I attended the Cedar City Singles Ward activity tonight at Woods Ranch up Cedar Canyon.   It is a fun little area and it was fun to attend.   Naturally I was shy and a bit standoffish when I first arrived.  I don't know a lot of the members of this ward and I don't necessarily get wild and crazy around people I don't know.   Fortunately a few ladies I do know took notice and extended an invitation to hang out with them.  It was good and helped me to get a bit more comfortable.   After awhile I was throwing away my plate and saw my friend Collette and I spoke with her for a few minutes then walked up to the fishing pond with her and others.

Later after walking back down to the pavilion area we ended up by the horseshoe pits.  Some were playing and some pits were open.  I asked Collette if she would like to be my teammate. She agreed and we played a couple of great games.

We won our first game and then ended up in another game against Ron Cardon and Annie Draper.  We were getting hammered.  It was not good.  Then we made a comeback and got within two.  Then a ringer gave us our first lead.  The score was 18 to 17.  We needed a ringer to win it and the ever lovely Collette was on the pitch.  I don't know if that is proper horseshoe terminology but it will suffice.  Collette was ready to throw her first shoe, I encouraged her to throw a ringer and win the game.  She let fly a beautiful toss and the world suddenly went into slow motion.  I watched as perfection soared before my eyes and landed in a cloud of dust which settled to reveal the ringer!!!  It was fantastic.

Collette told me a few minutes later, after we had celebrated our victory, that she had said a little prayer before throwing that shoe.  She thought I might think it was a little silly but such is not the case.  I love it, love her faith.  Obviously I chose my teammate wisely.

Night Out

Went down to St. George tonight.  I went to the Temple first and enjoyed being there.  I love to be in the Temple, it brings me much joy.

Went to dinner with some friends.  Had a great time.  I must sleep.

Quiet Times

The house is quiet.  That is just weird.  I am so used to having the kids here.  I miss them, that is certain.

Evap Cooling

It has been a full day.  Started early, ended late and felt pretty good.  Took some time today to work on the swamp coolers both at work and at home.  New motor, new control and some wonderful cooling in the home.  It felt so good when installed into the house tonight.  It was still a bit warm upstairs but it is cooling and it is much more pleasant.

At the Brick House I had some work to do on the wiring and then had the water lines to replace.  I was happy when it all worked and pumped some cooler air in the kitchen.  Much needed.

Well sleep is also much needed and I must needs get some, cool sleep at that.

The Swamper

I am asleep.  I am hot.  Got no cooling.   Worked on the swamper at The Brick House today and am waiting on some info on the control for the unit.  I think I just need to sleep now.

Back home

I am home by my lonesome in this empty house.  I need to get back to working on projects so as to take my mind off of the quiet.  I woke up and had a text from Natty that they arrived safely.   That is good.  Not fun to not have them here.

Had a nice stay at Jim and Clo's.   It was good to visit with them a bit.  I don't think I would have lasted the rest of the way to Cedar last night so I am grateful to have a place to go.

When I got to town I stopped at the shop then ran over to the hospital to visit pops in the icu.  He was in pretty good spirits though he was weak and a little groggy.   Things are moving in the right direction.  That is good.

Guess that's all the ramblings I've got.

Notes on the day

I am beat.  Just thought I would make a few quick notes on the day.

Tree house builder show.  Crazy guy.  Pre church entertainment in the hotel room.

Harbor 1st Ward.  Bishop Nelson.  Sister Missionaries spoke.  Jack having a deep discussion with an older lady about the best way to cover a sneeze.  Not sure how the topic came up.

The USS IOWA - impressive.

Driving to the Los Angeles Temple.  The traffic stunk.  It was really bad and frustrating.  After having time on the temple grounds with my kids the traffic was totally worth it.

Temple time-  the great highlight of our trip.  I loved the grounds, loved the visitors center, loved the spirit.

Tough to say goodbye - the worst part about the entire thing.  I gave the kids blessings.  It is an emotional moment to say goodbye.   Love those sweet kids.

Stop in North Las Vegas, keeping us alive.  Much thanks Jim and Clo.

Bedtime-  sweet!

Beach Day

The big thing the kids wanted to do today was to go to the beach.  So after breakfast we relaxed for a bit then we got ready and we went to Long Beach beach.  I think that's what it was.  There was a nice big pier there and we looked out on three islands.  It was a good time.  Jack and Natty were some serious fish.  Andy was a bit of a waterboy himself.  It was a nice day for it.  The beach was not crowded at all so it was just us for the most part.  Well just us in the area we were at.

One of the big highlights was driving over two bridges and through the middle of the shipping ports.  We saw the USS Iowa at port.  That was awesome.  It would be nice to go and see it up close and take the tour but the price is like $18 each.  I don't have that.  Maybe we'll drive down by it for a better look tomorrow.

Well, it has been a fun day.  I have enjoyed the time with the kids and I think they've had fun too.

Are We There...?

I am completely exhausted at the moment.  Just got finished driving roughly 7.5 hours and I am beat.  I heard are we there yet too many times along with are we in the right town.  So glad we are here, that those questions are over and that I can now sleep.

Bed Bound

I am bed bound.  Long day and busy night.  Long day tomorrow with last day of school and then a long drive to long beach.  Yep, time for me to hit the sack.

The Countdown

The countdown continues.  Two days of school remaining.  The year actually went by pretty quickly.  The last 5 weeks have really gone by fast.  I remember telling Andy there were 5 weeks left and he freaked out a bit.  Anyways,  I booked a hotel for Friday and Saturday nights.   We're going to have to be ready go early Friday.  I need a good nap before the trip.

Sad Moment

There are moments leading up to the kids departure for the summer when I feel sad.  I had tho s moments with each of them today.  This morning I watched Jack out playing capture the flag with his class.  It was great.  Tonight when Natty got home from mutual she was a bit emotional.  Saying goodbye to her friends was tough.  Seeing her upset was tough.  Andyboy, he was just in here using the bathroom before bed.  When he walked in the room he asked "so dad, how was your day at work" ?  We had a nice little chat that ended with him at the door saying "I love you more" .  This is a hard week for me knowing they are leaving for a couple of months.  They are my best friends and I will miss them.

Last Week of School

What exactly gets accomplished on the last week of school?   I don't exactly know.  Seems like a giant party made up of a bunch of smaller parties.   Field trips, field days, class programs, whatever.  There is no homework, no library books, no tests, nothing of the sort.  I would say just let the kids out earlier but the problem would simply repeat itself with the new last week of school being pretty much pointless.  So there it is, we have the last week of school.  It serves its purpose - the winding down, the fun activities, the no homework... it's perfectly designed to make a lasting impression on the students that school is easy and fun and they should be excited to return.  Perhaps a little off the mark.  Whatever the case the last week of school is upon us and I am happy about that.

Power in the Priesthood - Talk in Church May 18, 2014

I spoke in church today.  I think it went okay and I certainly enjoyed the opportunity.  It has been over two years since I last spoke.  That was the Stake Conference talk back in March of 2012, Storms of Life.  It's on here back in the archives.  Anyway, I enjoyed it.  The folks came and sat with the kids who seemed to do quite well.  I'm sure it was nice for the kids.  I am grateful for the gospel in my life and for the blessings that we receive in our family as we strive to do what is right.  Life is not easy, far from it, but we are strengthened as we do the very best that we can do.  I know that the Lord is mindful of us and our needs.  Anyway, here is a copy of the talk if you are at all interested.

Power in the Priesthood

I.                    Open – The Accordion
Gary Larsen entertained us for years with his classic cartoon, The Farside.  I have a few favorites that pop into my mind every now and again.  One in particular I thought of this week is of a split screen where on top the character is greeted at the Pearly Gates and handed a harp.  The caption reads “Welcome to Heaven, here is your harp”.  In the bottom portion of the cartoon the character is in a fire filled location and the devil is there to greet him with “Welcome to (you know, the other place), here’s your accordion”.
When Shawn asked me to speak today he informed me that is was Sister Simmermans farewell talk and there would also be a youth speaker.  He wasn’t certain how much time they would take.  There would either be a lot of time or very little.  He said I would need to be prepared for either, I would be an accordion speaker.  True story.  So, you’ve heard from the harps, I am the accordion, bear with me.  I’ll do my best to not drag the meeting down.
II.                  Work, Work, Work

When I thought about Sister Simmerman entering the mission field I thought back to my own mission.  Surprisingly, it was 21 years and 19 days ago that I entered the MTC.  I thought about one of my favorite quotes that we recited often on mission about work.  President Ezra Taft Benson said:  “One of the greatest secrets of missionary work is work! If a missionary works, he will get the Spirit; if he gets the Spirit, he will teach by the Spirit; and if he teaches by the Spirit, he will touch the hearts of the people and he will be happy. There will be no homesickness, no worrying about families, for [he will have] all [his] time and talents and interest … centered on the work of the ministry. Work, work, work—there is no satisfactory substitute, especially in missionary work.” (The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1988, p. 200.)

III.                Power in the Priesthood

I was asked to speak today about Power in the Priesthood.  In the Priesthood Session of April conference Elder Dallin H. Oaks spoke of the Priesthood.  He shared the following:
President Joseph F. Smith described the priesthood as “the power of God delegated to man by which man can act in the earth for the salvation of the human family.”  Other leaders have taught us that the priesthood “is the consummate power on this earth.  It is the power by which the earth was created.”  The scriptures teach that “this same Priesthood, which was in the beginning, shall be in the end of the world also” (Moses 6:7).  Thus, the priesthood is the power by which we will be resurrected and proceed to eternal life.
Priesthood is the Power of God.  It is the power by which all things are and were created.  It is the power that will bring us safely home.  So power in the Priesthood is essentially power in the Power of God.

IV.                How do we obtain Power in the Power of God?

How do we obtain power in the Priesthood or power in the Power of God?  Work, work, work.  That’s the secret.  Living the gospel of Jesus Christ requires effort.

Scripture and Prayer
Randall L. Ridd of the Young Men General Presidency also spoke in the Priesthood session of conference.  One of the great lines from his talk was “Owning a smart phone does not make you smart, but using it wisely can”.  Brother Ridd said:
Right in the palm of your hand you have the wisdom of the ages – more importantly, the words of the prophets, from Old Testament days to President Thomas S. Monson.   But if you don’t regularly recharge your cell phone, it is useless, and you feel lost and out of touch.  You wouldn’t think of going a single day without charging your battery.
As important as it is to leave home every day with a full charge on your cell phone, it is far more important to be fully charged spiritually. Every time you plug in your phone, use it as a reminder to ask yourself if you have plugged in to the most important source of spiritual power – prayer and scripture study, which will charge you with inspiration through the Holy Ghost.  It will help you know the mind and will of the Lord to make the small but important daily choices that determine your direction.  Many of us immediately stop whatever we are doing to read a text message – should we not place even more importance on messages from the Lord?  Neglecting to connect to this power should be unthinkable to us.

Words of the Prophets and Church Leaders
Every morning before school we gather as a family and have our morning prayer before Natalie leaves for the bus.  With the boys out of bed I take the opportunity to put my smart phone to good use and turn on conference.  The other day we started on our third round of April conference and during Elder Holland’s talk Jack walked into the room with me.  It was the story of the missionary getting hit by mashed potatoes.  Jack was smiling.  I asked what he was smiling about.  “I’m just so happy I got to hear this story again”.  There is power when we fill our homes with the words and the stories of our Prophets and church leaders.

The Temple
The Temple is a great source of power to each of us.  Elder Dallin H. Oaks shared in his talk on the Priesthood that “When men and women go to the temple, they are both endowed with the same power, which is priesthood power.  … Access to the power and the blessings of the priesthood is available to all of God’s children.”

Family Home Evening
Sometimes Family Home Evening can like we are walking though the very depths of the place where they hand out accordions.  I testify to you that as we endure through some of those painful gatherings we are blessed with power for our obedience.  I still recall Family Home Evening lessons from my youth that helped me to gain a testimony and a desire to do what is right.

Serving Others
This week we had a great opportunity to serve others and to serve with our brothers and sisters.  The storm last week left a little bit of a mess and cleaning tree branches from the streets was a big task.  I was strengthened as I worked along side many of you and am grateful for these opportunities to serve.

The primary answers are sources of strength that increase our power in the Priesthood.  They help us to draw nearer to God and arm us with power over the adversary.

V.               Courage
I recently had a conversation with Natalie when she told me that choosing the right can be hard.  There is a lot of pressure from peers and sometimes fellow members of the church to support things that are contrary to the teachings of the Church and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  In the Priesthood session of conference our beloved Prophet, Thomas S. Monson spoke of this and the need for courage.
We live in a world where moral values have, in great measure, been tossed aside, where sin is flagrantly on display, and where temptations to stray from the strait and narrow path surround us.  We are faced with persistent pressures and insidious influences tearing down what is decent and attempting to substitute the shallow philosophies and practices of a secular society.
Because of these and other challenges, decisions are constantly before us which can determine our destiny.  In order for us to make the correct decisions, courage is needed – the courage to say no when we should, the courage to say yes when that is appropriate, the courage to do the right thing because it is right.
Inasmuch as the trend in society today is rapidly moving away from the values and principles the Lord has given us, we will almost certainly be called upon to defend that which we believe.  Will we have the courage to do so?

They That Be with Us

Youth, things that you face are challenging and it can be hard to stand for truth and right.  Though you may feel alone, know that you are not alone when you are on the Lords side.  I love the lesson taught to the servant of the man of God in 2 Kings 6.
15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots.  And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?
16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.
17  And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see.  And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

VI.                Close:
Each of us is blessed by the Priesthood.  As we follow the Lord and his Prophets, as we have the courage to choose the right even when it is hard, we will be blessed with power in that priesthood.  Of this I testify in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Car in Garage, Check

The title says it all.  Got home after a fantastic father and son's camp and decided that if I sat down I was going to fall asleep and that garage needed to get straightened out.  Off to the garage I wet and I stayed until it was done.  Oh, there are some things that need to go and other adjustments to be made but tonight the car is in the garage.  It's been a few years since we've been able to do that.

Sharing Raisins

I am laying next to Andyboy in our tent at the Father and Son's camp out.  He is eating some trail mix and is sharing his raisins with me.  Andy is a tent body and was ready to lay down as soon as we pitched the tent.  Jack is somewhere around the fire.  He enjoys the fire side and scurried off in that direction as soon as the tent was pitched.  I believe I can hear him doing his best dog impersonations right now.
The boys have been looking forward to this camp out for a while.  Happy to be out here with them.  Sure do love these guys.

I think I will keep this short.  I am quite tired and just need to crash out.   Yep, crashing out.  Sleepy down.

Nostrils

I wanted to record something from Sunday.  I was in the hallway at church with Jack.  He was avoiding some of primary.  Anyhow, we were discussing some things, similarities between he and I.  He didn't pay attention to some of the items but did notice that we have the same nostrils.  How about that?  Pretty fantastic. Stff.

Repeat, clean up, aisle nine

I didn't get very far last night before passing out to exhaustion.  I had something good brewing but hit the home button on my phone whilst attempting to hit the spacebar and every time I do that it closes the blogger and whatever I have written is lost.  It's a real pain in the backside.

Anyhow, clean up on aisle nine.  There are a ton of trees that are down because of the storm.  We've accomplished a very serious pruning throughout the city.  Whilst driving the streets we see piles of branches all over the place.  Big piles.

We received the call as a ward to go out and clean our streets, our aisle nine.  It has bee a lot of fun.  I love working with my brothers and sisters and I love the savior.  I want to do what he would have me do.

Clean up on aisle nine...

Had a special Family Home Evening loading hauling and dumping downed branches.  I will write more tomorrow.   Pretty much exhausted right now.

Branch Down

Last night I mentioned we were getting snow in May.  That snow came heavy and wet.  At roughly 1 AM I was awoken by a loud crack and thunderous sound.  I figured it was lightning and thunder and tried to return to sleep.  I began wondering if lightning struck the tree.  I heard the same sound again and more cracking.  It kept waking me up and I decided to go investigate.

I discovered what was happening.  The Big tree in the backyard was breaking under the weight of the snow.  I found a fallen branch on the cable lines.  We don't have cable tv but do have internet through the cable so I decided I would pull that branch off to keep it from further damaging the line.  I quickly discovered that I was in a danger zone as another large branch cracked and fell.  I pulled off the branch and headed inside and back to bed.

I did my best to sleep but woke up several times during the night to the same cracking noise followed by a thunderous thump as large tree branches crashed to the ground.

This morning I went out to assess the damage.  The tree got hammered.   We lost some very large branches.  It was a serious pruning.  The cable lines were hit by another branch and we're ripped down the side of the house.  We have some repairs to make.

There was a lot of snow sitting on tree branches and I went about trying to clear them so we could avoid more down branches.  That helped along with a break in the storm and a little breeze.

After church we began hauling downed branches out to the road.  Borden Jenkins came over with his chainsaw and cut up the bigger branches.  There was a lot, still is a lot of little stuff.  Quite the storm.

Though we had a bit of destruction I find myself quite grateful for the moisture received.   The land needs it, we need it too.  Grateful.

Lest I forget, Happy Mothers Day!   Much thanks to my incredible mother and all the wonderful mothers out there.  Much thanks to all great women who through their goodness and kind hearts love and serve children.  You are wonderful.

2nd Grade, check

Hard to believe the school year is winding down.  Eleven days of school left.  Today was the second grade program.  I got there and stood in the back.  That way I could see Andy and he could see me.  We had some fun.  I would sway a bit to the song and then Andy would be swaying with a big grin on his face.  I would fold my Arms and Andy would fold his.  It was a fun game and a fun program.  Hard  to believe my youngest child is  a few days away from checking off the 2nd grade.

Campfires

Taught 11 year old scouts about building campfires.  sorry falling asleep

I just got on to do tonight's post and found that I didn't quit s finish last night.  Lets just say 11 year old boys don't have much of an attention span and I fell asleep because they are exhausting.     We have some fun and try to learn a few things along the way.

Better Than

Yesterday I was doing my best to get ahead of the game.  We have a networking group that meets upstairs on Wednesday mornings and have to have the room set up a specific way.  I had it done with the exception of a few tablecloths that I needed to put on and maybe a few chairs to pull up to the table.  I had paused for a meeting and suddenly some stranger was all about taking the tables and chairs.   Turns out he works with Steve, our landlord. He said they needed the tables and chairs and said they would put everything back afterward and in plenty of time.  Mission accomplished.

Israel Israel God is Calling

The space bar and the home screen buttons are a bit to close.  Often times when I am in the middle of a post I hit the home button which exits me out of blogger.  When I get back in I find my post saved as a draft but no content remains.  It is a skosh frustrating as I have to start over.  Such was the case a moment ago.  One day we will own a computer again.

A week ago or so Dave and Trevin, one ourJun employees who recently returned from a mission, were talking about a CES Fireside Elder Jeffrey R. Holland gave in September of 2012.  The discussion sounded very interesting and I thought I should listen to it.  I had not done that and a few days ago Dave and I got on the topic.  Again I thought I should listen to this talk.  Today Dave sent me the title, Israel Israel God is Calling.  It is available on YouTube or on The Mormon Channel.   I highly recommend this talk.  I spent an hour of my day listening to it and it was fantastic.   I highly recommend it.  That is all.

MowJack

Had the privilege of doing a bit of yard work today.  Also enjoyed the treat of having Jack do some of the work.  He was waiting for me to finish edging and couldn't stop playing with the mower.  He asked if he could mow.  That is good stuff.

Record Day

SUU graduation made for an extremely busy day for us.  It was a record setting day.  It also was a day that did not end.  I am tired, big time.  Tomorrow has the potential to be quite busy.  Sounds fabulous but I need to get sleep now.

Hunting the Giant

The last of the giants, the big boy, was traveling through southern Utah today so we had to go and see it.  It was scheduled to be in Milford at 8:30 PM.  I had taken a pie over to KB and Georgia this afternoon and told them about the adventure.  KB asked if he could come and he volunteered to drive his big truck.  I said sure.  Natty had a band concert and the plan was to head out to Milford after that.

Natty opted not to go and went to her friends house.  KB was at our house when we got home around 6:30 and the boys and I jumped in with him.  After a quick stop at the KB Express for drinks we headed to Milford.

When we got to the train station in Milford we got some sad news.  The Big Boy was way behind schedule.  It wasn't going to be there until midnight.   It was supposedly in Medina and heading to Milford slowly.  Word was they would likely stop in Lund to grease the Big Boy.  KB has fueled up trains all along those tracks for years and knows Southern Utah well.  We decided we would catch it in Lund and off we went through the back roads.  That was its own adventure as we drove by the pig farms.  Fascinating set up and smell.  We almost clipped a calf on the road.  That was a bit crazy.  Eventually we pulled into Lund which was a ghost town.  There was another car parked out there.  It was one of Jack's Bear leaders and her boys one of which, Ben, was one of my 11 year old scouts.  Anyhow, word was it was still 25 miles out and only moving 20 mph.  We waited it out.  We did see a friend a freight train heading south.  It was moving with lots of cars.  That was fun to see up close.  We had another freight train stop in Lund and later learned it had to wait for the Big Boy to clear the track.  There was another freight train that came up from the mines on another track and also had to wait on the Big Boy.  A railroad guy came over and talked to us.  That was neat.  He gave us the details on the delays and how the other trains were delayed because of it.

Eventually we saw the lights in the distance and slowly the Big Boy made it our way.  It did not stop in Lund but kept on moving.  There was a diesel in front and one in back with a few cars attached in the rear.  The Big Boy passed quickly, the engineer stood there in the cab as if the old giant was under its own power.  What an experience.  We found it.  Awesome.
