Every week Jack comes home with a list of spelling words and at the end of that list is a word family word. For instance, .in was a word family. Words that are part of this family include in, fin, win, pin, sin, kin, tin, bin, twin, spin, etc. As we practice his spelling words we will usually pick out some words for that weeks word family to study. Well, we procrastinated this weeks spelling list until this morning right before school and the test. I was a little shocked when I found the word family for this week was .uck. Surely first graders would have nothing to do with the grand-daddy of four letter words. I quizzed the boy on his words and asked him what some .uck words were. Wouldn't you know that the first word out of his mouth was Fudge. I couldn't believe it. I turned and looked at Natty and we both kind of stared at each other with our jaws dropped to the floor. Then we laughed and I had to explain to Jack that this was not a good word and that we don't say it. He took the correction well and I hope that this particular member of the .uck word family doesn't slip itself into Jacks vocabulary anytime soon.
In other news the diamond blade floor grinder is a bad piece of equipment. We rented out the grinder and had to buy the blade so that we could grind down the floor in some areas at the Brick House. That thing kicked some butt. It worked better on the carpet glue then anything else we've used. That machine is a butt kicker but not quite as bad as the other one - the floor stripper. Actually did great and kicked up a ton of dust which it always does. There was a moment when I thought I was working in thick fog.
I am exhausted today and can barely think at the moment so I am hitting the sack.
