70 Minutes
I was thinking about some things today in Sacrament meeting while I had two boys all over me and a daughter who was constantly texting. What the heck? This is not what we should be doing and it is driving me crazy. I have apparently not discussed with my kids the importance of Sabbath day observance enough especially the way we act during Sacrament meeting and church. I started thinking about time. Sacrament meeting is only 70 minutes long. In one day we have 1,440 minutes and in a week there is 10,080. Is it that hard to take 70 minutes out of 10,080 and sit still, put down the phone, listen to the messages being shared and focus on the Savior? That is less than 1% of our time during the week, 1%. Certainly that isn't that much to ask and certainly two additional hours of reverently attending our church meetings on a Sunday is not too much to ask. The challenge for me comes when I am trying to listen and I am constantly being pulled in different directions by boys who should know better. So we chatted about 70 minutes this evening and just how long that was in comparison to the week, the year, 10 years and 100 years. We talked about being able to set apart that 70 minutes of our week, of our 10,080, and to focus on the Savior with little or no distraction. I think I will focus more on what we can do to make the Sabbath more meaningful in our Family Home Evening tomorrow. I don't believe that we are excessively bad or that we do bad things on the Sabbath. I do believe there are some things that we can set aside for the day and spend our time on activities that focus more on the Savior and the gospel. I don't think you snap your fingers and suddenly have the most righteous, Sabbath observing, perfect family. We learn line upon line, precept up precept, here a little, there a little. I am grateful for that council and direction.
